The W.O.W Team
(The Women Of Woolwich Team)
If you haven't heard about these ladies yet, you'll soon meet them around our centres. But let us explain who there are and what is this all about.
CGCC successfully received a grant to fund a level 1 accredited 10 day Interior and Decorating course for unemployed mums. The course ran for 10 days from 9.30am until 2.30pm and a free crèche was available for their little ones. 8 mums enrolled, they didn't know each other but were keen to learn new skills.
The objectives of this course were to:
- Gain self-confidence/personal qualities such as responsibility, self-esteem, sociability, self-management
- Develop personal skills (such as reading, writing, maths and listening as well as creative thinking, decision making, problem solving, visualizing and knowing how to learn; interpersonal skills i.e. be a member of the team, teaching others new skills, serving clients/customers, working in a diverse group of people)
- Gain new employability skills
The course was divided in 3 parts: Learning & Practicing (3 days); Community Painting Work (4 days - they have redecorated our Pound Park childlren's centre) and a health and safety (3 days). These ladies have all finished the course and are now in the process of taking the final test to get their CSCS card which will allow them to work on building sites. One mum has already passed it! We had 100% attendance and our mums were so taken by the experience that even when their children were ill, they found a friend or a member of their families to look after them, that's what we call being committed!
When asked how they felt after completing the course they said: " Happy, creative, excited, fantastic and proud of myself". Since the end of the course (21st February), some of them have already redecorated their own flat/house, others have researched loans to finance a level 3 Interior decorating course at uni.
These mums didn't know each other. Now they are best of friends, help each other and meet regularly. One mum told us "I didn't socialise and felt lonely before the course. Now these ladies are my best friends and I want to see them every day. I feel a lot happier" We are so proud of their commitment and achievement. Ladies, you really are our WOW Team! Here are some photos of them at work.
If you are an unemployed mum, can commit to a 10 day full time course, would like to enrol to our next course (dates to be confirmed) and live in Woolwich Riverside or Charlton area, please call Christel Warn on 0208 3314128 or email her firstname.lastname@example.org. No prior interior decorating experience needed but a basic level of English and full commitment are required.
